Some people are always ahead of trends when it comes to nutrition, food and eating experiences. They fundamentally believe that they are what they eat. They question, research and choose carefully. Shopping in specialty markets and stores is typical since they don’t always find everything they need in mainstream supermarkets.

Imagine Emily, a 27-year-old trendy, healthy woman from your country. She was the first of your friends to follow a gluten free diet five years ago, sprout her food, eat goji berries and quinoa, and she insists it all tastes fabulous. She’s the nutritional foodie in the group.

Emily is an early adopter for every new trend. She is also health conscious, believes “You are what you eat” and takes great care of herself everyday. She has a wealth of information about food and beverages and doesn’t care how much trouble it is to eat or drink well. She wants to know where the food comes from, what it contains and what it does to her mind and body.

Think about the Emily you know. What does she eat/drink? Why? What are the strange (strange to you) foods and drinks she consumes now that we may all eat/drink in three to five years' time?  A global Food and Beverage company would like to know what new foods and beverages health-conscious Millennials are eating and drinking, and how their habits are changing around the world, to spot the earliest signs of food & beverages trends.

Imagine Emily making her food choices: what are the things she is sensitive to? What kind of out of the ordinary things does she eat or drink? What does she make at home because she can’t find it in stores? What kind of food does she pack in her suitcase or purse, because she can’t be without it? What food and beverage diets is she into? What type of restaurants does she go to? What products/services does she follow or use? What is the tension or issue she is currently facing?

Sfida Creativa

In a presentation with visuals and text, show us your Emily’s new favorite foods or beverages and tell us why it matters to her.

You don’t have to have graphic design skills for this contest!

We’re asking you to envision the future trends for foods and beverages, based on your Emily type of friends, but NOT to create any product. What will the topic of your discussions be like? Grab your phone or camera, take a picture of the out of the ordinary food and beverages, services or technologies you find and answer our questions below!

To help you create your entry, think about this: twenty years ago organic food and drinks were really new and only the Emily’s of this world knew about it, knew where to buy organic products, and ate them when possible.  In 2016, in many markets, it has gone mainstream: many people eat organic products, those that don’t eat them know vaguely what organic is, and big manufacturers have created organic food and beverage options. We would like you to envision what will be the next trend, similar to organic food and drinks in impact, sales and change of habits.

Your idea can be just about anything. As a guide, these are categories we find interesting, with a few examples to illustrate the kinds of things we are looking for:

  1. Source of production.

Anything from the ocean to the farm.

  1. Ingredients

Anything from edible bugs and insects to chia seeds, skyr, or coconut water.

  1. Flavors and supplements

Anything from local ‘exotic’ flavors like Rocoto Peruvian chilies through aji Amarillo to traditional Chinese medicine.

  1. Culinary techniques and preparation

Anything from one-pot pasta through steam cooking to repurposing food

  1. Consumption habits, rituals or concerns

Anything from 5 mini-meals a day through not eating carbs and protein at the same meal, to eating only blue food for a day or sprouting food to optimize nutrient absorption

  1. Technology

Anything from sensors to 3D printed meals to interactive kitchens.

  1. Diets

Anything from the Paleo Diet to the Mediterranean diet and others.

We’d also like to learn about the motivations and drivers behind your choices and findings. Why would Emily eat this?  Is it because it’s healthy? To avoid certain illnesses? To manage her weight or build muscle tone? Or is it doing good for the planet or society? Is it ethical?

It can be something you’ve just picked up or heard from a friend. Or it has been quite common and trendy in your region but the rest of the world probably hasn’t seen it yet. We’re very interested to get your cultural perspective.

Your entry should include at least a visual and answer five questions:

  1. What is this trend you are seeing? Describe and illustrate it. (Provide quotes, pictures, screenshots, explain what does it for Emily, how does she feel about it, how it can benefit her community, anything that can build your point.)
  2. Who is talking about it?
  3. Why do you think it is important? What’s the motivation?
  4. What existing brands/products are on the market?
  5. Why do you think this trend will become more mainstream in the future? Who do you think will pick up on this trend and why? (OPTIONAL)

Please note that we don’t accept entries about alcohol or drugs. Also, we won't accept entries relating to trends that are fairly established in the market already. For example, a vegan meal or anything around gluten-free diets, as they have been around for a long time now. If you have more than one idea, please submit them separately in different entries.

Our client will use them as inspiration for further research and see how they can develop products to meet people’s future needs.

Criteri di Vincita

We’re looking for ideas with some vision on future food and beverages. The visual look of your entry doesn’t matter so much, but we would like you to provide visuals for your entries to enrich your findings. The winners will have to make us understand why it is going to be a trend and what the benefits are. The idea needs to be new, unique, “niche” right now, but with potential to become a food phenomenon.
